Christmas vacation loans 

Christmas vacation loans are now available for all University staff and students.  Items will be issued or automatically renewed as follows:

From Monday 9 December 2013

• Non-requested items - Items that do not have a reservation at point of issue or renewal will be due for return on Monday 20 January 2014

From Monday 16 December 2013

• Requested items - Items that have reservations on them at point of issue will now be due for return on Monday 20 January 2014

These loan periods do not apply to External borrowers.

On Monday 20 January 2014, if the item does not have a request, we will continue to automatically renew it beyond 20 January.  If your item is requested during the vacation then it will be due for return on 20 January 2014.

Before you go home, check your library account in StarPlus to make sure that your items have been renewed over the vacation (you can also renew the items yourself) and to return any items that need to be brought back to the library before you leave.  

Please remember to cancel any reservations that you no longer need.

The University Library Survey 2013 – tell us what you think

Managing references in Google Scholar

Google Scholar has just brought out a new feature that allows you to save and organise the references you find when searching.

Once you're logged into your Google account simply activate 'My Library' from Google Scholar and then whenever you want to send a reference to your Library just click 'save' underneath each search result.

From 'My Library' you can create different labels to organise your references into groups, making them easy to find, and you can also export your references to endnote or other more advanced reference management software.

Searching for Researching

301, the University skills and development centre, is offering a series of workshops aimed at helping students develop the skills they need to succeed in their studies.

The Searching for Researching workshop is delivered by The University Library and explores how to find resources for your undergraduate research such as an essay or report. 

You will look at the different ways to search for information and how to evaluate your results to get the highest quality information into your work. You will also learn about plagiarism - making sure you use your own ideas and referencing the works of others properly.

While the Library's resources are the number 1 place to go when researching any topic, there will often be plenty of information freely available online too. Just remember to always check the quality of what you find, think about who has produced it, when and why and use your critical thinking skills to assess the reliability of every source you find.

The quality of the entries into the competition were exceptionally high, and as a result took us a great deal of time to shortlist and then choose the winners. As a result, there were also 7 runners up for the Silent Study Room and four runners up whose pictures have been used in the staff meeting room.

Welcome Back!

Hope you all had a good summer. The Library has been busy while you've been away and there are quite a few changes that have been made to the Library services. Here's a quick run down;

1. Library Pin  - Your library pin number is now the same as your Ucard pin number. If you don't know what yours is go to https://www.shef.ac.uk/cics/password, login with your University username & password and choose option 6 to have your PIN e-mailed to you. You can also change your Ucard pin by selecting option 9. 

2. Automatic Renewals - From now on as long as no-one has requested your books we will automatically renew them for you. We will send you an e-mail to let you know if any of your books cannot be renewed due to requests on them, and we will also send you a weekly borrowing statement to remind you which books you have out on loan and highlight any that have been requested.

Keep up-to-date with you Library account by always checking your weekly borrowing statement!

3. Fines -  Fines are now only charged for the late return of requested items but will because of this accumulate at the rate of £2 per day. So again remember to check your library account and borrowing statements regularly!

4. Loan Entitlements -UGs and PGTs can now borrow up to 25 items at any one time - so you'll never run low on bedtime reading.

Photography Competition Winners

We recently held a photography competition at the Health Sciences Library - Royal Hallamshire Hospital with the aim of displaying the winning entries in the silent study room. The topic of the competition was, “Bringing the outside in”

Due to the phenomenal response of over 300 entries received, it took us a little while to decide who the winners were!

Research Data Management - your views wanted

The Wellcome Trust, on behalf of the Expert Advisory Group on Data Access (EAGDA) are looking for the views of the research community on the incentives and culture change for data access and sharing.

The survey responses will be used to inform the development of recommendations and guidelines on data access and management for the EAGDA funders. The EAGDA funders include the Wellcome Trust, Cancer Research UK, the Economic and Social Research Council and the Medical Research Council.

New MUSE

CiCS launched their new version of MUSE yesterday. The new version is a lot simpler and slicker but you can still get quick access to all our Library resources.

To access the Library's catalogue, StarPlus, simply log-in and you'll find a link to the catalogue in the 'my services' section at the top of every University webpage. 

You can also click on 'view all services' to find links to interlibrary loan requests, myResource lists and myLibrary account.

To find a particular database that the Library subscribes to, simply search StarPlus using the 'University Collections' tab or use the A-Z list available from the Library webpages. 

Automatic Renewals

We've made some changes to the library system to make it easier for you to keep your account up to date.

From now on, we will automatically renew your loans as long as no-one has requested them. 

If one of your loans has been requested and we are unable to renew it, we will send you an email to let you know that you need to return it.  

We will also send you a weekly borrowing statement to remind you which books you have out on loan and highlight any that have been requested.

Make sure you check your weekly borrowing statement and library account regularly to avoid fines.

Upgrades to the Library System in June

The Library will be upgrading many of its back-office systems between 14th and 21st June.  Whilst we aim to keep disruption to a minimum during this transition period, certain Library services will be affected.  We aim to have services in operation by Friday 21 June.

We'll be posting regular updates on the library system transition webpages, on this blog, and via our Twitter feed. 

From Friday 14th June, certain features of StarPlus will be temporarily unavailable:

• Online Renewals:  If you wish to renew books during the transition period, please email us at library@sheffield.ac.uk, call the Library Helpdesk 0114 222-7200, or visit an information desk at any library site.  
• Requests: It will not be possible to place requests via StarPlus but if you wish to request a book please go to any of the Library desks and fill in a reservation card. We will make your request as soon as the new systems are in place.
• myResource lists service will continue to be available, however links to StarPlus may be affected. 

The processing of interlibrary requests will be delayed during the transition period, but we will process all requests as soon as possible. If you have any interlibrary loan items on loan to you and you are likely to be away from The University please return these before you leave.

Vacation Loans

Normal loans to Staff, NHS and PG Research students
Items issued to these borrowers between 3 June & 6 September will be due for return on 4 October, unless the item is requested by another borrower.


Normal loans to Part-time PG Taught and Part-time UG students
Items issued to these borrowers between 3 June & 20 September will be due for return on 4 October, unless the item is requested by another borrower.


Normal loans to Full-time PG Taught and Full-time UG students
Items issued to these borrowers between 3 June & 27 September will be due for return on 4 October, unless the item is requested by another borrower.

Loans already reserved for someone else
Items issued from 6 June will be issued for 2 weeks or until 30 September, whichever is shorter.

The loan period for external borrowers will remain at one week throughout the vacation period.

A normal loan item may be recalled by the library if someone else requests it. Recalled items must be returned within 15 days of the recall.

Fines will be charged in any overdue loans, so please ensure that your borrower record is kept up to date.

The Health Sciences Library at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital is holding a photography competition with the aim of displaying the winning entries in the silent study room.  This room is windowless and we would like to make it a more pleasant working environment.  

Therefore, if you are a current student in the Faculty of medicine Dentistry and Health and a current Health Sciences Library - RHH user, please submit up to three images on the topic of “bringing the outside in” by 10 of June 2013.  

Be as creative as you can within this broad subject area.

10 of the best: 9# Health Statistics

‘Lies, damned lies and statistics’ – ok so statistics can be a tricky thing, some people love them whereas some people believe they’re just used to bolster any old weak argument. They’re also not always the easiest thing to find. While a quick google search will throw up all the random facts and figures you could wish for, checking the reliability of such figures can be difficult. Yet this is absolutely crucial for anyone carrying out academic work. Statistics can in fact be a great way to add to an argument or observe general trends, particularly in the field of public health, but you need to make sure what you’re quoting is correct. 

The Library has put together a list of some of the best places to look for health statistics. 

These range from local statistics, such as the Sheffield Health and Well-being Atlas which includes interactive tools to access data at different geographic levels across Sheffield, to a whole range of national statistics. These come from official government sources such as the Department of Health and trusted charities such as Cancer Research UK . 

There’s also a list of sites for International Statistics. The World Health Organisation: European Health For All Database is a great starting point for finding out broad trends in the European Union and the WHO Global Health Atlas provides an overview of infectious diseases around the world.

Easter Vacation Loans & Opening Hours at RHH

Easter Vacation Loans are now available at the RHH and other University Library Sites meaning that you can have the item you need over the Easter Vacation!

There will also be some changes to the opening hours of the RHH Library over the vacation period.  The vacation opening hours are as follow:

Thursday 28 March: 9-5 (All services close at 5pm)
Friday 29 March - Monday 1 April: Closed

Normal opening hours will resume on Tuesday 2 April at 9am.

If you require study space during this time, the Information Commons will be open 24 hours on a self-service only basis.  Access to the Information Commons is restricted to members of the University only, please note that NHS members and external members of the University Library do not have access to the Information Commons (details available here).

Changes in StarPlus

We are working in the background to improve our library systems.

You can now place a reservation within StarPlus, from the 'Request' tab.

However, to see the total number of copies available of a particular book, you need to click on the 'Details' tab and then the 'This item in classic Star' link on the right hand side. This is a temporary measure until we upgrade further in the next few months.

StarPlus Upgrade - Thursday 7th March

Work to integrate account information and renewals and reservations into StarPlus will take place on Thursday 7th March starting at 10.30am. This may last for several hours and there will be some disruption to the service.

It is recommended that you save your eShelf contents to Endnote or another reference service as a precaution. Alternatively you may choose to e-mail your eShelf contents to yourself. 

Every effort will be made to ensure that disruption to services is kept to a minimum.

Need help with referencing?

Citing your sources correctly is an essential academic skill, but it can often be quite daunting.  The library has lots of help and advice on how to avoid plagiarism, and how to reference correctly.  Check out the Information Skills Resource for tutorials of the referencing style for your department.

There are a number of referencing management programmes that can help you to organise and format your references.

The Library supports the use of Endnote Web.  Endnote Web allows you to import references from online databases such as Web of Knowledge and Scopus, access them from any computer, and add them to your word documents as you write.   Endnote Web is free for all University of Sheffield students - find out more on the Information Skills Resource.

An alternative Reference managent software is Mendeley.  This is a free web-based programme that offers similar features to Endnote Web.  Have a look at the video tutorials available on their website.

This month on ’10 of the Best’ we’re looking at one of our favourite patient information sites – the award winning, healthtalk online. 

Working closely with the Health Experiences Research Group at Oxford University, healthtalk online  provides support for over 60 medical conditions by engaging with real patient experiences. With videos, audio clips and interviews, over 2,000 patient stories are presented, from the first symptoms through to diagnosis, treatment and long-term care.
                                                                               
Here's a couple of examples from healthtalk online's section on Parkinson's disease;

            

Together these stories provide a fantastic resource for patients, carers or anyone wanting to find out more about the reality of living with a particular condition. However it can also be an invaluable resource for students and medical practitioners. As well as patient stories the site provides information on some of the latest medical research and health care trends. If you click through to the condition you’re interested in there are also extra pages full of links to other reliable resources including books and online publications. So take a look!
